
TUCSCON, ARIZ. (VCSUVikings.com) – Valley City State split its doubleheader in Arizona Sunday. The Vikings beat Viterbo 15-4 in five innings, then lost a close low scoring 3-2 game to Dakota Wesleyan.
The Vikings are 8-8 on the season. Viterbo falls to 2-7, Dakota Wesleyan is now 12-9.
GAME 1: Valley City State 15, Viterbo University 4 F/5
Valley City State scored eleven runs in the second inning on the way to a 15-4 win over Viterbo Sunday afternoon in Tucson. The V-Hawks scored a run in the top of the second to take the 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Alexis Watson. That was the last lead Viterbo would have.
In the bottom of the second, exploded by sending 16 batters to the plater with eleven scoring, six after two were out. Reagan Mieras got the scoring going with a two-run home run to left, scoring Kennadi Stone who had doubled to lead off the inning. Avery Kuklinski singled to left, scoring Bailey Leroux and Maddy Hazelton to make it 4-1 Vikings. Pascale Kihn reached on an error and Kuklinski scored to make it 5-1. Kihn was thrown out trying to get to third on the play. Stone hit her second double of the inning to bring in Madden Bogenreif and Jenna Decker to make it 7-1. Ahleeya Nicola singled in Stone to make it 8-1. Leroux singled to right, scoring Nicola to make it 9-1. Hazelton then singled to center to bring in Mieras. The scoring ended when Kuklinski singled in Leroux to make it 11-1.
In the top of the third, Viterbo made some noise with three runs. A solo home run by Natalie Martin made it 11-2. Marissa Carter-Olson scored on a fielder’s choice and Courtney Denton singled in Watson to make it 11-4.
With the bases loaded and two out and Mieras at the plate in the bottom of the third, Bogenreif scored on a wild pitch then Mieras doubled in Stone and Nicola to make it 14-4. Hazelton singled two batters later, scoring Mieras to make it 15-4 and that was the final.
Reagan Mieras was 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored, a double, home run, and four RBI. Kennadi Stone was 2 for 2 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Bailey Leroux was 2 for 2 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Maddy Hazelton was 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. Avery Kuklinski was 2 for 3 with a run and three RBI. Jenna Decker was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Ahleeya Nicola was 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Madden Bogenreif scored twice.
Maddy Hazelton got the win in the circle going three innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs with four walks and five strike outs.
GAME 2: Dakota Wesleyan 3, Valley City State 2
In game two against Dakota Wesleyan, the pitchers seem to have the upper hand.
Maddy Hazelton and the Tigers Alison Ernsberger were locked in a good one after the Tigers plated three runs in the bottom of the second.
With the bases loaded and one out, Ashlen Johnson scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 DWU. Kassidy Lopez then singled to center to score Dusti Draper and Jordyn Blogg to make it 3-0 Tigers. That was it for the Tiger offense the rest of the way.
The Vikings got on the board in the top of the third when Madden Bogenreif lead off with a solo home run to make it 3-1.
A sacrifice fly by Kennadi Stone brought in Pascale Kihn to make it 3-2 Dakota Wesleyan in the top of the fifth. But that was it for the Vikings scoring.
The Vikings only got one more baserunner the last two innings.
Madden Bogenreif led the way by going 3 for 4 with a home run. Pascale Kihn was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Jenna Decker, Reagan Mieras, and Maddy Hazelton were all 1 for 3. Kennadi Stone added a sac fly for an RBI.
