MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO – For a while, Jamestown Jimmies Women’s ACHA Division 1 Hockey had a chance to get back at their season-long nemesis. However, Minot State prevailed again.
Abby Talman scored a power play goal 8:52 into overtime Wednesday as Minot State defeated Jamestown for the seventh time in as many meetings this season, 5-4 in pool play at the ACHA Women’s Division 1 Championship at the Cetene Community Ice Center.
Talman’s unassisted game-winner for Minot State (18-6-1-7) came only 1:29 after Jamestown (9-18-1-1) was given a penalty for having too many players on the ice.
UJ goalie Madelynne Sylvestre was impressive in goal, making a career-high 43 saves. The Jimmies were outshot 48-32.
At first, it appeared like the Beavers were on their way to an easy win as Paige Crossley, Marlie Rutherford and Olivia Opheim all scored in the first 8:29. The Jimmies then rallied, with Jayden Baker scoring at 10:54 of the first period to cut MSU’s lead to 3-1 after one period.
Bethany Wielgosh scored 6:58 into the second period for Jamestown, who was then down only 3-2.
A power play goal only 1:19 later by Cameron Schmidt restored the two-goal lead for Minot State.
Back again came UJ. A power play marker by Samantha Beaulac at 12:29 of the second period cut the Minot State lead to 4-3. Kesley Amick evened the game for the Jimmies with 2:13 left in the middle period. The third period was scoreless.
The Jimmies will complete pool play Friday against Michigan-Dearborn.
