
Daniel (Dan) Jacob Voegele was born on January 20, 1941, in Glen Ullin, ND to Christ and Ida (Flemmer) Voegele. He was second to the youngest child of 10 children. He had 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Dan’s mother passed away when he was 2 and his father remarried Katie Lassle.
Dan married Kathy Johnson on July 30th, 1966, and to that marriage they were blessed with two daughters, Jackie and Sheila.
Dan was raised and educated in the Beulah area. Throughout his life Dan had the opportunity of working in several places. Early on, Dan served with the North Dakota National Guard, Farmers Union, and Beyer Cement of Valley City. He then went on to sell Kirby vacuum cleaners in South Dakota. In 1980 he moved his family to Bowman, ND and went to work in the oil fields. Dan had the love of trucking for heavy equipment from a very young age. Through friendships he had made through Beyer cement, he went and worked for Weist Trucking. Later on, Dan had contracts with the postal service where he ran his own semis. You knew Dan was talking over the CB when you heard the handle “Daniel Boone” come across in the semi.
In his younger years Dan loved to roller skate. People in Valley City always commented about how he could dance on roller skates and nicknamed him “crazy legs.” When Dan would pass through Valley City, folks would stop and mention how they remember his crazy legs still as he got older.
Dan was a member of the Valley City Eagles club for many years. He loved playing cards with his friends and family whenever he had the chance. He was known to have a competitive side and would make sure you were following the rules.
Dan was blessed with four granddaughters that he enjoyed watching grow up. Dan had a special place in his heart when it came to his family as he grew older. He valued every chance he had to spend it with them. Making sure to always stop when he was passing through town to have supper and to say hello.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents Christ, Ida, and his stepmother Katie. His siblings, an infant sister Emma, Otto (Rita), Reuben, Ray (Donna), Lenora (Walter) Sailer, Frieda (Don) Kroh, Chris (Carol), and brothers-in-law Garland Martin and Albert Hall.
He is survived by his daughters Jackie Hafele (John Schonart), Sheila Sutherland and granddaughters Jessa Hafele (Brandon Halberg), Tory Hafele, Ashlee Sutherland, and Kyla Sutherland; great grandchildren Allie Hafele, Waylon Halberg, and Eloise Pickus; sisters Tillie Martin and Delores Hall; sister-in-law Gloria Voegele and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Dan will be held at 2 pm April 10, 2026, at Traditions Funeral Service, Oliver-Nathan Chapel, Valley City. Burial will be later in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Beulah, North Dakota. Dan passed away on Sunday, March 22, at Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale, ND.
