BISMARCK – A parade of base runners led to a needed happy day for Jamestown Jimmies Baseball.
Jamestown had no less than 30 base runners Wednesday in an 11-1 non-conference win over first-year NAIA program Bismarck State at Aaron Haaland Memorial Field. The Jimmies had lost six straight.
Jamestown (6-19) scored seven runs in the first three innings against a struggling pitching staff for Bismarck State (13-11), which yielded 12 hits and 12 walks. Mystics pitching also hit five batters and there was an error.
Ben Swennumson drove in the first run for UJ in the top of the first with an RBI single.
Frankie Malagon increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-run double in the top of the third inning.
UJ’s advantage became 7-0 after a four-run fourth inning. One run scored on a wild pitch, Matty Morin knocked in two with a double and Trayson Kostial walked with the bases loaded.
Grant Chapman drove in a run with a sixth inning single. With the bases loaded in the visiting seventh, Chapman was hit by a pitch and Reese Logsdon walked, both with the bases loaded.
An error by the Jimmies gave the Mystics their only run in the bottom of the seventh. Jamestown regained their 10-run lead in the ninth inning when Melvin Maldonado hit a pinch-single.
Elias Harris (1-1), the second of five Jamestown pitchers, hurled two scoreless innings for the victory. Starter Peyton Hochhalter went the first four frames and struck out four while giving up two hits. Defensively, UJ turned three double plays and Chapman picked a BSC runner off second base.
The remainder of the Jimmies’ schedule will consist of NSIC games, of which they have 25 remaining. Jamestown will play a doubleheader Tuesday at Minot State.
