
MILES CITY, MT – At last, Jamestown Jimmies Baseball’s conference losing streak is over.
Adrian Warcken hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday to send Jamestown over Minot State 3-2 in the second game of a doubleheader at Denton Field.
Jamestown had lost seven straight conference games, including game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader, when Minot State scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 9-5 win.
Game 1: Minot St. 9, Jamestown 5
Jamestown (6-20, 1-12 NSIC) took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth before Minot State (11-15, 6-10 NSIC) rallied against Jamestown relievers Payton Hochhalter (0-1), Ben Bohlmann and Beckett Stimpson.
Hochhalter allowed walks to Jake Orthner and Oscar Pegg to begin the inning. With one out, Michael Williamson singled in pinch-runner Nate Larsen to bring the Beavers within 5-4. Bohlmann, who has struggled all season, then allowed a tying RBI single to Colton Bagshaw and a go-ahead RBI single to Jorey Anderson. A passed ball gave Minot State a 7-5 lead. Bohlmann had a strike out for the second out, but his throwing error and a walk extended the inning. Stimpson then yielded a a two-run single to Vinnie Gates.
Trayson Kostial hit his seventh home run of the season in the top of the third for a 2-0 Jamestown lead. Minot State answered with three runs in the home third on solo home runs by Bagshaw and Cowen Meyer and a go-ahead RBI single by Orthner.
Reese Logsdon restored the lead to UJ with a two-run double in the fourth and Ben Swennumson gave Jamestown a 5-3 advantage with an RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Jimmie starter Nolan McCaffery gave up three runs and six hits in three and a third innings.
Game 1: Jamestown 3, Minot St. 2
The ninth-inning rally began for Jamestown (7-20, 2-12 NSIC) when Jett Nelson singled with one out. Pinch-runner Dallas Cummins stole second, then came home on Warcken’s winning hit.
After Isaac Hanson (3-2) pitched eight excellent innings, Elias Harris was brought on for the last of the ninth. An infield hit by Meyer put the tying run on for Minot State (11-16, 6-11). A ground out sent Meyer to second and a wild pitch moved him to third base, but Harris then induced a game-ending ground ball by Oscar Pegg for Harris’ first collegiate save.
Hanson struck out nine while giving up just two runs and five hits.
A sacrifice fly by Bagshaw put Minot State up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Logsdon tied the game for the Jimmies with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, followed by an RBI single by Matty Morin for a 2-1 UJ lead. Noah Madas evened the game for the Beavers in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single.
Jamestown will meet Winona State in a doubleheader on Monday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
