JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The North American Bison Discovery Center is excited to announce the arrival of its first bison calf of the season, born earlier this week in the Center’s North Pasture.

The calf was born to one of the herd’s longtime residents, Cow #40. The Center’s north herd is primarily composed of mature cows that have lived together for at least six or seven years. This birth marks the beginning of what is expected to be another active calving season. The calf’s sex has not yet been confirmed—visitors and followers are encouraged to stay tuned for a future “gender reveal.”

The new arrival joins a herd of approximately 20 bison residing in two pastures. The North Herd is located adjacent to the Bison Center’s museum, while the South Herd is situated on the south side of Interstate 94.  Guests can safely view the North herd from the observation deck, now open for the season, when the animals are grazing in the North Pasture. Guided pasture tours will begin in late May, offering a closer look at the herd and its newest members.

In addition to viewing the bison, visitors can explore interactive exhibits, a children’s discovery area, and a gift shop inside the Bison Center.

“Every calf season is special, but there’s something particularly meaningful about seeing one of our older cows continue to contribute to the herd,” said Ilana Xinos, Executive Director of the North American Bison Discovery Center. “Cow #40 has been a steady presence here for years, and this new calf is a reminder of both the resilience of these animals and the importance of the work we’re doing to support them. It’s an exciting start to the season, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with our community.”
