JAMESTOWN – At times, the first season for Jamestown Jimmies Softball in NCAA Division II brought good stretches, but the end was rough.
UJ dropped their last six games, including two to Wayne State, who had a doubleheader sweep on Sunday at Trapper Lawrence Field 7-1 and 9-1.
Game 1: Wayne State 7, Jamestown 1
Taylor Coleman (15-6) not only struck out 10 in five innings for Wayne State (40-13, 20-9 NSIC), she also put WSC ahead to stay with a two-run single in a three-run third inning. Coleman allowed just four hits and an unearned run.
Jamestown (30-22, 11-18) pushed that run across in the first inning. Trinity Gregg, playing in her final games of a superlative Jimmie Softball career, walked, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kasydi Bennett walked and Maddie Spaeth reached on an error. With one out Amanda Burch reached on another error to score Gregg.
After Wayne State’s three-run third inning, the Wildcats scored three more in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Abby Blair (6-6) gave up six runs and nine hits in three and two-thirds innings in her final UJ start.
Game 2: Wayne State 9, Jamestown 1 (5)
Coleman had two RBI singles in the first three innings for Wayne State (41-13, 21-9 NSIC) before Lille Timm put the game out of reach in the third with a grand slam to left field. Coleman ended with three RBI for the game.
Kennadi Borngrebe (18-6) moved into a tie for third in NSIC wins with a three-hitter and seven strikeouts.
Sonya Rodgers, in her final Jimmie at bat, prevented Jamestown (30-23, 11-9) from being shut out with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
