
VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) After achieving one of the biggest upsets of the NAIA baseball season, the Vikings could not find similar success Sunday in the Frontier Conference title games.
Bellevue University, ranked second in the nation, but an upset victim of the Vikings in the third round of the tournament, stormed back with wins of 10-7 and 16-5 to capture the Frontier Conference title games.
The Vikings finish their season 26-24-1, with a rise that saw them move from sixth to second in the Frontier Conference standings in the final two weeks of the regular season. Bellevue finished the season 48-4.
In the first title game, the Vikings rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the bottom of the third, scoring five to take a 6-5 edge. But Bellevue scored three in the seventh and two in the ninth to earn the victory.
Alexis Velasco drove in four runs in a 2-4 day, with Connor Hoyt finishing 3-5 from the leadoff spot, scoring twice. Velasco had a pair of doubles, while Hoyt also doubled in the game.
Takao Cookson took a tough-luck loss, allowing five earned runs over 8.2 innings. It was his second appearance in the tournament.
In the second game, the Vikings again would rally, scoring two in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh to close a five-run gap to 6-5, but a seven-run bottom of the seventh for the Bruins sealed the game.
Brady Papineau was 2-3, scoring a run and driving in a run. Connor Martin took the loss, allowing six earned over 5.2 innings, striking out six. Five relievers allowed 10 runs in the game.
