(NewsDakota.com) – Ave Maria Village’s Relay for Life team is looking to start a new community tradition this year.

The group is organizing what they call the first-ever Rib Fest in Jamestown. The event will feature vendor booths, games for kids, music by three different bands, classic cars and motorcycles, and plenty of barbecued meat.

Event organizer Lori Mettert said Ave Maria’s Relay for Life team did 13 fundraisers in four months last year to raise money for Relay for Life. This year, they decided to focus on one big fundraiser and introduce a new event to the community.

“We just wanted to do a community wide event rather than doing a bunch of fundraisers,” Mettert said. “We decided we were going to try and start a new tradition with the community and start a rib fest.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown. Mettert said it will be similar to Fargo’s well-known Rib Fest, except on a smaller scale. Proceeds from booth fees and gate fees will go to the Stutsman County Relay for Life. She says they hope to raise $5,000 or more from the Rib Fest.

Mettert says they’re planning two gate fees, a basic fee of $3, or an $8 fee that gets the person a barbecued beef meal. She says other local Relay for Life teams are invited to set up booths at the Rib Fest as fundraisers for their teams.

“We have a big property (at Ave Maria) and it’s going to be full,” Mettert said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Anyone interested in a booth can contact Mettert or Jeannie Schmidt at 252-5660. Mettert encouraged interested groups to call as soon as possible, because space may be limited.
