N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Two groups are helping feed families in the community in different ways.
During the recent Jamestown Public School Board meeting, Joan Morris with Daily Bread and Lana Meissner with the Summer MOST Lunch program came before the board to share what their groups do and how they benefit area families.
Morris is with Daily Bread, a non-profit volunteer organization that rescues food in the community to distribute to hungry families in Jamestown.
Daily Bread established the first food freezer at Washington Elementary in 2014. Now, they’re in each school in the district.
Morris says they also have freezers at the James River Senior Center, St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Gardenette, the James House, Ave Maria Village, and Community Options.
Morris says over 8 tons of food was rescued in 2017 and 6 tons in 2016. All this food is distributed to freezers in the community. Morris says they continue to seek donations to stock freezers.
One of the other programs benefiting from the Daily Bread is the Summer MOST Lunch, which provides meals to children in Jamestown over the course of the summer.
Lana Meissner is the site coordinator for the program. She says the program only ran two months in 2017, but she hopes to extend that this year.
Any student K-12 in the school system can have a meal through the MOST program. Both Lana and Joan spoke at Monday night’s school board meeting.
