Oakes Babe Ruth squad remained undefeated on the season with three wins in the 2012 Johnson Memorial Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament in Ellendale June 23 and 24.
Oakes defeated Ellendale in pool play on Saturday morning by a final score of 15-2. Cole Kelly and Grayson Roney each pitched two innings for Oakes. Oakes faced Redfield, SD, in the afternoon game and came back from a 4-0 deficit, scoring two runs in each the fourth and fifth innings and three in the sixth to win by a final score of 7-4. Bryce Meehl pitched, allowing only two hits and striking out ten. He issued two walks and hit two Redfield batters. Meehl, Ethan Zetocha, and Michael Kelly each had two hits for Oakes.
The win over Redfield put Oakes in the championship game against Linton on Sunday evening. Kaleb Sell reached on a single in the first inning and was driven in by Bryce Meehl. After a scoreless second inning, Meehl hit a double in the third. Meehl and Cole Kelly each scored on Linton’s defensive miscues to extend the lead to 3-0. Ethan Zetocha reached on a single in the fourth and scored on Meehl’s triple. Oakes added another run in the sixth when Matt Kuipers was driven in by Kaleb Sell.

Michael Kelly pitched for Oakes and faced the minimum number of Linton batters through the sixth inning, with a single in the fourth inning covered up by a double play turned by the Oakes defense. Linton scored a run in the seventh when Kelly hit a batter and then gave up a single down the left field line. Oakes took home the championship trophy with a final score of Oakes 5, Linton 4. Kelly pitched all seven innings, allowing only two hits, walking one, hitting one, and striking out four Linton batters.
Oakes is now 7-0 in section play, and 12-0 overall. Next up is a date with Ellendale on Thursday night at Cummings Field in Oakes
