(NewsDakota.com) It was the worst possible time to start a losing streak.

The Oakes Babe Ruth baseball team had not lost consective games all season until Tuesday, and as a result had to settle as a state runner-up at the 2012 North Dakota Class B Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament, after Grafton ran through Oakes on the way to the championship by scores of 8-1 and 8-0.

Grafton needed to win both games to take the title back, and lead by dominant pitching from Hunter Baldwin and Zak Hernandez with Oakes’ inability to stop early offensive starts from Grafton proved to be their undoing. Oakes only managed nine hits in the two games, whereas Grafton hit very well off of Jon Tyre and Bryce Meehl, picking up 14 hits through the two games.

Grafton (36-11) becomes the first team in state history to win both the State Class B American Legion and Babe Ruth Baseball Championships in the same year.  Oakes finishes the year at 25-2.
