JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The James River Humane Society will be sheltering some dogs from the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation in Fort Totten.

Tribal leadership on the reservation has long been concerned about the number of stray dogs on the reservation. More recently, a six-year-old boy was mauled to death.

Board member Jay Nitschke says they’re hoping to help alleviate some of the issue.

Nitschke says they have volunteers collecting some of the dogs to bring to the shelter. She added they have had reservation dogs in the past.

As a reminder, Nitshcke says dogs need time to adjust when they’re adopted.

In other shelter information, Nitschke says the board will be exploring the return of some regular hours at the James River Humane Society. Once a decision is made, more information will be posted on their website and on their Facebook page.
