CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City girls basketball team won their second straight overtime game to open the season, knocking off Maple Valley 63-53 in extra time Monday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
Maple Valley’s Megan Kasowski made 1 of 2 free throws with 5.6 seconds left to force overtime tied at 48, but Valley City knocked down three 3-pointers in OT, including the dagger from Jessica Denholm.
Valley City improves to 2-0 and Maple Valley falls to 1-1.
Dierra Diegel scored 14 points for Valley City. Megan McDaniel had 12 on four 3-pointers, Clarissa Olson scored 11 and Madison Taylor had 10.
For Maple Valley, Cassie Pautz scored 22 points and knocked down five 3-pointers. Rylee Nudell had 20 points in the loss.
Maple Valley led 25-22 at halftime, and extended the lead to as much as eight points at 34-26. But Valley City rallied back with a 9-1 run, capped off by a McDaniel 3, to get back within 36-35. The teams traded baskets before Valley City was finally able to tie it at 42-42 on a 3 by Olson.
Valley City extended the lead on a jumper by Madison Taylor and went up 46-42. Maple Valley wasn’t done yet though, and regained the lead 47-46 on Pautz’s fourth 3 of the game
Dierra Diegel answered back for Valley City, giving the Hi-Liners a 48-47 lead.
Kasowski then made her one free throw with 5.6 seconds left to force OT.
The Hi-Liners scored the first five points of overtime, including a 3 from McDaniel.
Valley City is on the road at Fargo Davies Tuesday night for a one-point EDC game. Maple Valley takes on Shiloh Christian on Dec. 22 in Bismarck.
