The Valley City Hi-Liner tennis team had a busy weekend. On Friday, they had a pair of non-EDC matchups, narrowly defeating Dickinson and then wrapping up a win against Mandan. The match against Dickinson would come down to #2 doubles, with Abby Martineck and Lexi Svenningsen winning four points in a row to win the match and preserve the Hi-Liners’ winning streak.
The Hi-Liners would venture to Sheyenne High School on Saturday for The Sheyenne Invite a varsity tournament where 12 players across six singles flights and three doubles flights compete. Both of the top-rated doubles teams for Valley City found success on the day, with Sufficool and Martineck finishing second in #1 doubles and Zaun and K. Neilson finishing first in #2 doubles. Skye Neilson would be the top-scoring Hi-Liner in singles play, finishing in sixth after rallying from a first-match loss to make it to the consolation final before losing to Madisyn Stauss of Grand Forks Central.
Valley City will host the Sheyenne Mustangs on Tuesday at 4:00 PM, and the EDC Championship will be on the line with the Hi-Liners, who can clinch the crown with a win. However, if Sheyenne wins by a score of 6-3 or better, they would be crowned champions. If Sheyenne wins 5-4, the next tiebreaker would favor Fargo Davies, who would become the EDC Champions, with Valley City falling to third.
