JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JPD) – A nearly 11 hour stand-off is over after a man who barricaded himself inside a room of a residence in Jamestown was taken into custody on Wednesday, June 18th. A shelter in place for nearby residents has been lifted. The following is a news release from Jamestown Police Department.

On June 18, 2025, at approximately 01:54 hrs., Jamestown Police were dispatched to a residence inside Western Park Village, on a report the resident not feeling safe in her home. The victim indicated there was a male inside the residence, who was allegedly using drugs and yelling at her.

Upon further investigation, the victim reported the male had threatened to “kill her”. The victim also reported the male refused to leave the residence and there were multiple firearms inside the residence, which the suspect would have access to. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, but he refused to speak with officers and quickly retreated further inside the residence. He barricaded himself in a back room. 4 occupants were safely evacuated from the home, but the suspect took a 2-year-old child with him, when he went to hold up in a back room.

During the standoff, Police were eventually able to establish some communication with the suspect inside the home. However, the suspect refused to comply with Police requests to come outside or to assist the child in leaving the residence.

At approximately 12:45 hrs., the James Valley Special Operations Team successfully entered the residence, quickly removed the child, and took the male suspect into custody.

The male suspect has been identified as 30-year-old Jacob Lee Schmitt of Jamestown. He was arrested on suspicion of Terrorizing. Schmitt was taken to Stutsman County Corrections, to await formal charges. This incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.

Jamestown Police were assisted by the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota Highway Patrol, Jamestown Street Department, the Stutsman County Emergency Management Office, and Jamestown Area Ambulance.
