LYNCHBURG, VA – There was one late power play goal Thursday for Jamestown Jimmies ACHA D1 Men’s Hockey. However, they could have used another.
Sixth-ranked Liberty held on to defeat fourth-ranked Jamestown 4-3 at LaHaye Ice Center.
Jentzen Kaebel’s holding penalty with 3:41 left in the third period put Jamestown (10-5-1-0) on the power play for the first time in the game. After Liberty (12-3-0-0) took a bench minor for too many men on the ice with 1:56 to go, the Jimmies briefly had a 5-on-3 power play. Out of all this, Brad Fortin scored his sixth goal of the season from Kaelan Shelton and Matthew McIntyre with one minute to play, but UJ couldn’t force overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Liam Cox-Smith gave Liberty a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the second period. Carson Brown scored his seventh of the Jimmies at 17:01 to tie the game. Mason Smith then scored for the Flames with 1:55 left and Liberty led 2-1 after two periods.
Michael Debrito made the Liberty lead 3-1 only 50 seconds into the third period. McIntryre scored his fourth for the Jimmies, set up by Brown, at 10:23, but Kal Essenmacher restored the two-goal lead for the Flames at 12:15.
Jamestown had 43 shots to Liberty’s 32, but Flames goalie Konrad Kausch made 40 saves. Brandon Weare stopped 28 shots for the Jimmies.
Jamestown and Liberty will play again on Friday evening in Lynchburg.
