JAMESTOWN – January’s middle weekend turned out to be a rough weekend for Jamestown Jimmies Basketball.

After being swept Friday by CSP, both teams fell again on Saturday to Winona State at Harold Newman Arena.  Winona State’s men topped Jamestown 79-70 and the Jimmie women had a fourth quarter rally fall short in a 76-66 loss to the Warriors.

Men: Winona State 79, Jamestown 70
Again playing without senior forward Owen Hektner, Jamestown fell behind late in the first half and could never recover against Winona State (5-12, 4-8 NSIC), who had lost six of the previous seven games.

Five double figure scorers led WSU as Ryan Heise had 20. The 6’10” forward hit four three-pointers and also had seven rebounds. Tyler Mason and Jaron Crews had 15 points each, Gavyn Hurley scored 12 and Aidan Bardic tallied 11.

Anthony Walters topped Jamestown (9-9, 7-5) in scoring with 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Ford Okehi and Thomas Diew each scored 11. Okehi had four assists. Diew pulled down seven rebounds.

Jamestown had three brief leads in the first half, but Winona State later had four six-point leads, the last of which came when Mason hit a three-pointer with two seconds to play and Winona State led 41-35.

Walters hit a layup 19 seconds into the second half to cut the advantage to four, but the Jimmies were never closer again. A three by Crews, jumpers by Hurley & Mason and a free throw by Bardic put the Warriors up 49-37.

The closest the Jimmies came was down 65-59 when Walters drained a three-pointer with 7:03 left. In the next minute and a half, four free throws put WSU up 10.

Even with the loss, Jamestown remains tied for the NSIC North lead with Northern State, who lost at home Saturday to Concordia St. Paul.

Women: Winona State 76, Jamestown 66
Jamestown (4-12, 2-10 NSIC) lost for the ninth straight time and again struggled to put consistent play on both ends of the floor together until the fourth quarter. Winona State (12-6, 9-3) led by 26 early in that quarter before the Jimmies started much better play, scoring 27 points and slicing the lead to the final margin.

Sadie Jarmolowicz scored 15 for Winona State and hit 4-of-7 three-pointers, improving her standing as the top shooter of threes in the NSIC. She also had 10 rebounds. Hailey Markworth scored 14, Megan Schuman dropped in 13, including 11-of-11 free throws and Natalie Meaux scored 11.

Haidyn Crockett matched a career high with 16 points for Jamestown. Allie Berns tallied 14. Jessika Lofstrom had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Jamestown last won on December 6 at home against UMary.

Both Jimmie teams will play Friday at St. Cloud State. Coverage will begin on Friday at 5:00 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
