
Valley City, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Region 1 Boys Basketball Tournament begins on March 9th with the Region 1 Quarterfinals Games at the Valley City Hi-Liner Activity Center. You can catch all of the action on KDDR The Tornado and Thunder 98.3.

Quarterfinal #1: R1#1 (4) Oakes 45-50 R2#4 Kidder County
The Wolves upset the District 1 Champion and #4 team in the State as they beat the Tornadoes 50-45. The game started with back and forth play between the Tornadoes and Wolves but the Wolves would take a 14-10 lead through the 1st quarter of play. They would hold onto the lead through the 2nd quarter as they would lead 24-23 going into the half. The Tornadoes would storm back in the 3rd quarter and take a lead going into the 4th quarter at 39-37. The Wolves would then lock back in and take home the victory late winning 50-45.
The Tornadoes season comes to a close at 19-4. The Wolves advance to Semifinal Tuesday.
Quarterfinal #2: R2#2 Edgeley/Kulm/Montpellier 51-28 R1#3 Sargent County
The Rebels advanced back to the Region 1 semifinals as they beat the Bulldogs by a score of 51-28. The game started slow with neither team able to find a rhythm as the Rebels would take a 10-6 lead after 1. The Rebels would begin to pull away in the 2nd quarter building their lead to 26-13. The Rebels run would continue in the 2nd half taking a 40-21 lead through 3. They would put it away in the 4th with a 51-28 victory.
The Bulldogs season comes to a close with a 11-12 record. The Rebels take on the Wolves in the semifinals tomorrow at 6:00 pm.
Quarterfinal #3: R2#1 Linton-HMB 73-50 R1#4 Wyndemere-Lidgerwood
The Lions are back in the Region Semifinals for the first time since 2023 as they beat the Warbirds 73-50. They started the game raining 3-balls and took an early 27-14 lead through the 1st quarter of play. They would continue to light it up from downtown and take a 39-20 lead into the half. The Warbirds would attempt to comeback in the 3rd quarter bringing the lead down to 12 at one point but the Lions would hold onto the lead at 59-42 lead. The Lions would continue to rain down 3’s in the 4th quarter and take home the victory winning 73-50.
The Warbirds season ends with a 12-11 record. The Lions will play tomorrow night in game 2 of the semifinals.
Quarterfinal #4: R1#2 (5) Hankinson 73-78 Medina/Pingree/Buchanan F/OT
The Thunder avenged their 2025 semifinal loss as they upset the reigning Region 1 Champion in overtime by a final score 78-73. The game started with Pirates up early before the Thunder battled back and ended up leading after the 1st quarter 18-17. Neither team was able to pull away in the 2nd quarter as the Thunder maintained their lead at 37-35. The Thunder would then take a 9 point lead in the 3rd quarter but were unable to maintain it as the Pirates battled the lead back to 53-51. The game would return to back and forth play in the 4th quarter with the Thunder leading late but Raeshaun Earl would hit a 3 pointer to tie the game at 63-63 and send it to overtime. The overtime period would continue with back and forth play but the Thunder would end up taking the lead late again and come home with the win to complete the D2 sweep winning 78-73.
The Pirates season comes to a close with a 19-4 record. The Thunder play the Lions tomorrow night.
