SIOUX FALLS, SD – For a generally young Jamestown Jimmie Baseball team, Thursday was an exceedingly long day.
NSIC leader Augustana drilled the Jimmies twice, sweeping a doubleheader 9-2 and 21-4 at Ronken Field.
Game 1: Augustana 9, Jamestown 2 (7)
Augustana (13-5, 7-0 NSIC), ranked in all three NCAA Division II baseball polls, scored in every inning but one in ending the two-game winning streak for Jamestown (5-14, 1-6).
Carter Heinsch had two two-out RBI singles to lead the Vikings. Ragan Pinnow had three hits while Carter McPeak, Nate Soelter and Kobe Eikmeier had two hits each. Augustana scored a run in the first, two in the third and two in the fourth to knock out Jimmie starter Luke Zimmer (0-4), whose early season struggles continue. Zimmer allowed five runs and eight hits in three and a third innings and his ERA is now 12.15.
Jacob Thomas hit an RBI double in the sixth and Dallas Cummings smacked an RBI double in the seventh for Jamestown.
Game 2: Augustana 21, Jamestown 4 (7)
In the second game, Augustana (14-5, 8-0 NSIC) was even more relentless, knocking out 19 hits, drawing eight walks, and again scoring in five of their six offensive innings.
Frustration began early for Jamestown (5-15, 1-7), who had two runners on base in each of the first three innings and stranded all six. Augustana scored a run with two out in the first inning, four runs with two out in the bottom of the second, and another run in the third.
Benney Benitez provided the Jimmies with their highlight of the day, his first collegiate home run, a line drive over the right field fence in the top of the fourth inning.
Augustana then responded with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Jamestown brought in three runs in the top of the sixth, Augie scored seven runs in their half.
McPeak, Brandon Weigel, Troy Berg, Pinnow, Heinsch and Soelter each drove in two runs for the Vikings. Berg had three hits.
Ryder Peace and Melvin Maldonado also drove in runs for Jamestown. Isaac Hanson (2-1) allowed seven runs, five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in three and a third innings.
Jamestown will conclude its series at Augustana on Friday. Coverage will begin at 2:45 PM on The Voice of the Jimmies, Jamestown 107.1.
