MANKATO, MN – Many consider Winona State as the class of NSIC Softball, especially with their pitching. On Saturday, the Jamestown Jimmies found out about that firsthand.
Winona State limited the Jimmies to three hits total in two games in a 3-0 and 2-0 doubleheader sweep at Minnesota State University’s Maverick Sports Dome.
Game 1: Winona St. 3, Jamestown 0
Izzy Howe (11-1) and Ashley Theisen combined on a two-hit shutout to keep Winona State (24-4, 3-0 NSIC) spotless in conference play. Howe pitched the first three innings, allowing both hits and striking one out. Theisen worked the last four and struck out seven.
Both hits for Jamestown (19-7, 0-3) were doubles, by Amanda Burch in the second and by Maddie Spaeth in the fourth. That was the inning of the Jimmies’ best scoring chance. After Spaeth’s double, Sydney Grendler walked. But Madelyn Webb struck out, Burch grounded into a fielder’s choice and Kylie Yanzuk struck out swinging.
Abby Blair (6-2) gave up three runs and six hits in four and two-thirds innings.
Lila McNeil had three hits and two RBI for the Warriors.
Game 2: Winona St. 2, Jamestown 0
Jayda Berg (10-2) did the shutting down in this game for WSU (25-4, 4-0) with a one-hit shutout. Jamestown’s only base runner was Peyton Quam, who singled to lead off the third inning. Quam was then erased on a double play and Berg retired the final 15 hitters and faced the minimum 21 batters.
Whitley Wischmeier drove in both runs for Winona State.
Aubrey Quern (6-1) pitched a complete game for the Jimmies (19-8, 0-4). She yielded two runs and five with seven strikeouts and five walks.
UJ will host St. Cloud State on Saturday at noon as part of Softball Day in North Dakota.
