VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City Schools Superintendent Josh Johnson provided this update to the community on the progress of their School Facility Project 2028. He said if you are new to our school or community, the ‘project’ is in reference to the new 3-12 school that was approved by school district voters on June 10, 2025, and will be constructed next to and connected with Jefferson Elementary School. The new school portion of this project is expected to be completed in the year 2028. At some point, we will be demolishing the current high school, remodeling portions of Jefferson Elementary School, and selling both the District Offices and Washington Elementary School.
Johnson said we are a little anxious to see the bids on the new school that will be opened after 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 2nd. He said we keep hearing that there has been a lot of interest in our project and that leads us to be hopeful that competitive bidding will result in costs that are on or below budget. After reviewing bid results with Construction Engineers during the week of April 6-10, our steering committee may provide recommendations for our school board at their regular meeting on April 15, 2026, at 5:30 PM. We will share updates on our bids with you after this board meeting.
What’s Happening on Central Avenue up by Jefferson Elementary School? In preparation for construction on the new school, the current overhead electrical lines serving Jefferson Elementary and Hanna Field need to be removed and replaced by a new power line. A new power line is being bored beneath the parking lot into Hanna Field. This line will immediately serve Hanna Field but eventually serve Jefferson Elementary School and the New School. For the duration of the construction project, Jefferson will receive power from a temporary power feed off 12th Street. Thank you to both Mortiz Excavating Excavation Contractor in Valley City ND | Moritz Excavating and the City of Valley City for ensuring that our students, staff, and coaches do not have any disruptions in our power at Jefferson Elementary or Hanna Field this spring.
