6-hunger-booth-sharing-fruit-with-walkers

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – One hundred and fifty kids and adults walked the Jefferson Mile on Wednesday, May 6 to raise funds for hunger relief, with funds going to the Barnes County Food Pantry, the Hi-Liner Food Pantry and to hunger world-wide. One in eleven people around the world go hungry every day, with one in five going hungry daily in Africa.

There were various booths located around the Jefferson Mile related to hunger and health manned by various church groups in Valley City. The Congregational Church and Epworth Methodist gave out fruit to walkers and shared hunger and health facts such as: In the USA there is one doctor for every 385 people, but in places like Sub-Saharan Africa there is only one doctor for every 5000 people.

Faith Lutheran Church had a booth on malaria and demonstrated how bed nets are used when people sleep to prevent mosquitoes from biting them. The mosquitoes transfer a parasite which can make people sick or die. Progress with vaccines has been very slow, so the bed nets are important to use.

Chair of the ecumenical group that puts together the CROP WALK for HUNGER, Sharon Buhr states that this is the 47th consecutive year of the Walk. And during covid many people walked but it was a virtual walk with everyone walking on their own. Buhr states that Thrivent was generous to donate funds to purchase the fruit that was offered along the walk, and a number of T-Shirts for walkers. “A big thank you to Thrivent,” notes Buhr, “and thank you to all who have already donated to alleviate hunger.” “People enjoy doing things together such as this walk”, continues Buhr, “and knowing that the funds they raise will help people across the globe.” Anyone who would like to donate to the CROP WALK for HUNGER can take their donation to one of the participating churches or contact Sharon Buhr at 840-0973.
