N.D.- The Oakes High School basketball team started off their season with a 70-37 loss to Maple Valley in Tower City on Saturday night.

Oakes was able to come back from a 6-0 deficit to start the contest, and pull it to a 10-10 tie in the first, but never was able to come that close again. The Raiders, lead by Dylan Lerud’s three three-pointers in the late second quarter gave Maple Valley at 33-19 halftime edge.

To start the second half, Maple Valley pulled even further ahead, as the Tornadoes were outscored 25-8 in the third quarter.

“We were hanging in there with them for the first quarter, but weren’t able to keep up after that.” said Oakes Head Coach Brandon Bata. “That’s a good team we played tonight, and they showed why they’re one of the best teams in District 2.”

Jordan Hasleau lead the Raiders with 14 points, followed by Lerud with 13. Oakes had 15 points from Tanner Zetocha, Simon Maddock had eight.

Maple Valley is 2-1, and now plays at the Barnes County Boys Basketball Tournament on Tuesday with coverage on Q101.1 FM, and NewsDakota.com. Oakes falls to 0-1, and will next play on Thursday night, as they welcome the Lisbon Broncos. Coverage can be heard on KDDR-AM 1220 and NewsDakota.com, starting around 7:15.
