City, N.D. – High water conditions have led to a strong interest in who and how many people are represented on the Barnes County Water Resource District board.

After a lengthy discussion from several Barnes County residents the board voted 4 to one to move back to a 5 member board. The members would serve At-Large with one focusing on the Sheyenne River Valley.

Commissioner Rodger Berntson voted “NO.” He favors appointing members by commissioner district instead of serving At-Large.

Water Board member Jeff McMillian was not reappointed after the board voted to appoint Jerry Hieb two weeks ago. The board has 3 members now and another 2 will be selected on December 29.

Two weeks ago the issue drew a crowd as the Barnes County Board voted 4 to one to select Jerry Hieb over board member Jeff McMillian.

Board President Cindy Schwehr said eligible Barnes County landowner should apply for the appointment in writing or by email to the county auditor’s office as soon as possible.

The Barnes County board plans to make a decision during their December 29 meeting at 8:15am.
