“Ben” Scheffert, 92, of Oakes, ND, passed away March 22, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Benjamin William was born January 14, 1920 in Ludden, North Dakota, to William and Lillian (Waite) Scheffert.  He attended high school in Ellendale for one year before going to work at the John Steinmetz farm near Hecla, and finishing his high school years in Hecla.  In 1941 he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota.   Ben served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, serving in the European Theatre.  He was united in marriage to Virginia Steinmetz on January 16, 1946.  They purchased a farm near Guelph, North Dakota, where they made their home and farmed.  Ben also enjoyed doing veterinary services for farmers and ranchers all over the area, not turning down anyone even if it was miles he had to travel.  Ben retired from farming in 1978, and in 1990 Ben and Virginia moved to Oakes.  In December of 2010, he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society. 

Ben was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lions Club, the American Legion, and was a board member of the Oakes Golf Club.  Ben was also a founding member of the Ludden Sportsmen Club and was their first President when it began in 1951.  Ben enjoyed playing cards, golfing, hunting, and fishing.  He also enjoyed bowling and was proud when he made it into the Hall of Fame for bowling. 

He is survived by his wife Virginia; five children, Peggy (Gene) Redlin, St. Charles, IL, Tom Scheffert, Ventura, CA, Skip (Candace) Scheffert, Lincoln, NE, Clare (Charlene) Scheffert, Columbiana, OH, and Russell (Linda) Scheffert, Lincoln, NE, two sisters, Genevieve Baker, Aberdeen, SD, and Francis de la Houssaye, Crowley, LA; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.  Ben was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harry and Chester, three sisters, Irene, Hattie, and Edna, and a grandson, Lucas.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service starting at 6:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes. 

The funeral will be Monday, March 26th at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Oakes, with a reception to follow at the church. 

A graveside committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Ellendale City Cemetery, Ellendale, ND.
