Fargo, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington wrestling team finished up the 2018-19 season with a 5th place finish at the state tournament. The Cardinals had 7 place winners out of the 8 wrestlers competing in the tournament. The Cardinals scored 106.5 total points, just 7.5 points behind 3rd place Central Cass (CC) with 114 points. Lisbon finally took charge of the tournament on the final day of the tournament outscoring runner-up New Salem-Almont (NSA) 177 to 151. Lisbon also won the state dual championship defeating NSA 46-25. South Border finished in fourth place with 113 points.
Lucas Geiszler (138) was the highest seeded Cardinal wrestler as a 2 seed and left the tourney as a state runner-up, losing a 10-1 decision to top seed Riley Zachmeier of Rugby. Geiszler finished the season with a 46-8 record.
Three Cardinals finished in third place, all placing higher than they were seeded. Tate Hoggarth (152), was a six seed and pinned Michael Thomas of Velva (5 seed) in 2:18 of the second period to earn his third place medal. Treston Lura (113), was a 5 seed and he scored a 7-6 decision over number 3 seed Jacob Hudson of Northern Lights (NL) in his third place match. Brecken Lura (126), the 4 seed defeated Matt Anderson of Hillsboro-CV (HCV) in OT 8-6. It was the 7th meeting between Lura and Anderson in the last 5 weeks and Lura won all of the meetings, including a 12-2 major decision the state quarterfinals.
Matthew Duchscherer (106) finished in 5th place and finished the season with a 42-12 overall record. Duchscherer is just a freshman. Junior Colton Buskness (195) finished in sixth place. Colton (4 seed) lost in the placing round to number 3 seed Gavin Reinke of Lisbon and had to forfeit his fifth place match due to injury. Beau Retzlaff (8 seed) at 182 finished in eighth place losing a 4-0 decision to Alex Charette (7 seed) from NL. Retzlaff lost a tough match prior to his final match to the number 5 seed Levi Schwab of Lisbon. Retzlaff was leading 1-0 until the final 10 seconds of the match and was put on his back for 3 near fall points and lost 3-1.

The 2019 senior wrestler of the year went to Kyle Burwick of Hettinger-Scranton. Burwick finished his season with a perfect 54-0 season. Burwick won the 126 pound championship match by technical fall (19-4) over the number 2 seed Chandler Nagel of Linton-HMB. New Salem-Almont head coach Dave Wolding was named the coach of the year.
