JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier, Carrington and Ellendale all picked up wins Friday in the opening round of the District 5 Boys Basketball tournament at the Jamestown Civic Center.
Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 60, Barnes County North 56
Philip Hagen’s three-pointer with 42 seconds left broke a 54-54 tie and lifted the fourth seeded Rebels to the 60-56 win. Hagen scored eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter including his team’s last six in the final 42 seconds. He would add three free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the win.
Cale Mathern scored 17 of his game high 19 in the first three quarters. He would add three assists. Isaac Huber had 10 points and five rebounds. Hagen added six boards. Alex Huber chipped in five points and team highs nine points and four assists.
Tanner Soupir led the Bison with 14 points and added six rebounds. Colby Brunner and Tucker Brown each had 12 points. Brunner added a team high nine rebounds.
The Rebels improve to 14-6 on the year and will play top seed LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Saturday at 6pm. Barnes County North falls to 12-7. They are off until Monday when they will play a region qualifying game at 4:30.
Carrington 56, Midkota 38
Midkota, looking for its first district victory, took a 6 point lead into halftime over the Carrington Cardinals but wasn’t able to hang on.
Both teams shot nearly around 38 percent in the first half, but the big discrepancy was the 2nd half. Carrington shot the ball at a robust 56 percent while Mikdota was held to 28 percent from the field.
The Cardinals defense was the story in the 2nd half. They held Midkota to 14 points in the half and just 2 points in the 4th quarter.
Carrington was lead by Seth Nelson with 24 points on 9-12 from the field, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Payton Smith had 16 points on 7-9 shooting as well.
Midkota’s leading scorer was freshman Logan Topp with 16 points.
 
Ellendale 74, Oakes 69
For the second time this season, Ellendale defeated Oakes. This time, however, the two teams battled back and forth in the 2nd half.
Oakes built an 11 point lead up in the first half and was clicking on all cylinders. Ellendale answered with a strong 3rd quarter outscoring Oakes 20-11. The Cardinals were jolted by Scott Wagner who racked up 23 points in the 2nd half (27 total in the game).
Wagner combined with Austin Molan (32 points) to score a combined 59 of the 74 Ellendale points.
Oakes’ leading scorer was Steele Hansen with 19 points.
