JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – The top-ranked Morningside College Mustangs took a 37-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 61-0 win over the University of Jamestown football team Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs (6-0 overall, 5-0 Great Plains Athletic Conference) opened the game with a safety, then found the end zone five times in the opening 15 minutes. Two more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter pushed the lead to 54-0.

A stingy Morningside defense held the Jimmies to 83 yards in the first half on 34 plays. UJ’s four possessions in the second half yielded 55 yards on 17 plays.

Jamestown (1-7, 1-5 GPAC) finished with 119 rushing yards on 39 attempts. Tanner Mathern (JR/Edgeley, N.D.) had 59 yards on 13 carries, including the Jimmies’ longest play of the game, an 11-yard rush. Josiah Cage (SO/Bloomington, Minn.) added 39 yards on eight attempts while Jimmy Hatch (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) finished with 29 yards on 12 carries.

TJ Milk (JR/Pahrump, Nev.), Jordan Olson (SO/Prior Lake, Minn.), and Jeremy Hautau (SO/Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) led the defense with six tackles each. Levi Scribner (JR/Crescent City, Calif.) had five stops, including a tackle for a loss, and two of Zachary Phillips (FR/Buffalo, Minn.)’ four tackles were for a loss.

Izaak Myles (SO/Apple Valley, Calif.) averaged 40.8 yards on his eight punts while Barry Williams Jr. (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) and Marcus Giles (SO/Blaine, Minn.) each had kickoff returns of 23 yards or more.

Jamestown hosts Midland (Neb.) on Saturday, October 26. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
