JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Getting back to hockey’s roots. That’s the goal of the annual Hockey Day North Dakota that returns January 21st through the 23rd in Jamestown.
Nick Bruns, a board member with Pure Hockey Skills North Dakota, says they wanted to model the event after the extremely popular Hockey Day Minnesota, which brings hundreds of spectators and teams from across the state to watch the sport outside in the elements.
When Hockey Day North Dakota first started in 2019, Bruns says goal was to have the outdoor event be hosted by other communities in the state. Due to COVID-19, he says they wanted to take one more year to iron out any kinks that others may experience down the line.
Bruns says having other cities host the event would bring more opportunities for teams across the state to play, keeping travel restrictions and scheduling in mind.
The site of Hockey Day North Dakota will still be held on the University of Jamestown Campus, but the rink was moved next to Wilson Arena. A full-sized outdoor rink has been constructed and ice is currently being set and maintained before the weekend long event.
Games will include teams ranging from youth, high school, and college age with an evening battle between the University of Jamestown and Minot, a rematch from Hockey Day 2019.
Bruns says they’ve also decided to forego a price of admission, adding that doing so will hopefully open up the event to many more this year.
A VIP tent will be available with admission being $50 for the weekend. Concessions will be available and the Wilson Arena will be open to allow spectators and teams to warm-up and dress.
