The match between the Hi-Liners and the Bruins was moved to a 1:00 PM start time to avoid the rain that came through the Valley City area yesterday. The match was another dominant showing from the Valley City tennis team wrapping up a sweep over their EDC rivals.

As a precaution, singles play started out the day as Kailee Neilson took to the court to face off with eighth grader Ruby Hawley in the first match of the day. Over the past few days, Neilson has been getting more experience against the top singles players for each EDC team, and after an up-and-down first set, she cruised in the second for a straight-set win. After her partner Georgia Zaun rolled to a singles win, the two joined forces and rolled to a doubles win over the South’s top team of Hawley and Morgan Saure.

The Hi-Liners’ usual top doubles team of Abby Martineck and Breck Sufficool would each find new partners for the day. Martineck and seventh grader Lexi Svenningsen won their match without dropping a game. Sufficool would partner with fellow senior Alyssa Thomsen, and the two would easily dispatch the team of Evvy Kristad and Ella Bourke (6-1, 6-0).

The rest of the Hi-Liners tennis quad would also stack up decisive victories, with not a single match reaching a third set. Overall, the match showcased not only the Hi-Liners’ experience but also their youth, with five of the nine players in the match for Valley City being sophomores or younger.

Valley City’s next contest is Thursday, May 9th, at 4:00 PM against Red River. Two matches on Friday start at home against Dickinson and Mandan.
