
JAMESTOWN – Aubrey Quern dominated one game. Northern State’s offense dominated the other.
Jamestown Jimmies Softball shut out Northern State 2-0 Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader inside the Nelson Family Bubble. The Wolves pounded out 15 hits in the second game and won 9-2.
Game 1: Jamestown 2, Northern State 0
Quern (8-4), a freshman, earned her first collegiate shutout and fourth complete game by pitching a one-hitter. Quern struck out nine, walked one and retired the final 18 hitters she faced.
Maddie Spaeth gave Jamestown (23-13, 4-9 NSIC) the only run needed with a first inning RBI single. Madelyn Webb’s first home run as a Jimmie made the UJ lead 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
McKenzie Wanner (5-9) started for Northern State (11-18, 3-10) and pitched a game that most times would be more than good enough to win. Wanner pitched a complete game five-hitter with two strikeouts and a walk.
Game 2: Northern State 9, Jamestown 2
Tevan Bryant provided the winning difference for Northern State (12-18, 4-10 NSIC), hitting a go-ahead three-run home run to left to cap a four-run rally in the top of the fifth. The big inning turned a 2-1 lead for Jamestown (23-14, 4-10) into a 5-2 advantage for the Wolves.
NSU scored two runs in the sixth, one of which was on an RBI triple by Hailey Cota. Emma Owens singled in a two-run seventh.
Northern State starter Aune Boben (2-4) pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Spaeth tied the game for the Jimmies in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple. Jorja Hainsworth gave UJ a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
Abby Blair (6-4) took the loss for Jamestown, pitching three innings and yielding three runs and seven hits.
Jamestown is scheduled to host Bemidji State in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
