CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The #23 VCSU Vikings football team picked up their fifth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon at Shelly Ellig Field with a 62-6 victory over Mayville State University.
The win advances VCSU to 6-1 overall on the year. The Vikings remain 3-0 in the North Star Athletic Association as this game with the Comets did not count towards the conference record.
Vikings opened up the scoring just 39 seconds into the game when Lenzel Koskela returned a 33 yard punt block for the games first touchdown. Things would only get better for the Vikings after that.
Led by Trevor Goerts’ 117 yard game, the Vikings would rush for a season high 303 yards. Ian Keller added another 77 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Vikings.
In the air VCSU was just as effective with quarterback Kurtis Walls throwing for 272 yards and five touchdown. Antoine Griffin was the recipient of three of those passes to the end zone and finished the game 120 yards receiving. Zach Johnson and Jake Miller were the receivers on Walls other two touchdown passes.
Marvin Conley led the Vikings defense with six tackles. The Florida native also forced a fumble and intercepted a pass. Nick McBeain, Ethen Preston, and P.J. Peterson each had six tackles as well.
The Comets only score came with 6:59 remaining in the second quarter when Lance Jackson ran the ball in from four yards out capping off a 77 yard Mayville State drive.
The Vikings return home to Lokken Stadium for the last home game of the season next week against Dickinson State. The Vikings and Blue Hawks met up earlier this year with the Vikings taking home a 33-21 win in Dickinson. The game can be heard on 1490 KOVC starting at 2:30pm.
