winning individual Folkstyle State championships in March, both Ethan Miller and Koltyn Grebel secured championships in Greco & Freestyle tournaments held last Friday and Saturday in Jamestown. Winning all three State Tournaments in the same season, is called the Triple Crown. Miller (3rd grader) has accomplished this 3 times in his career and this is the 2nd time for Grebel (2nd grader).
Miller blazed through the intermediate 70 lb division out scoring his opponents in all three state tournaments (Folkstyle, Greco & Freestyle) 71-0. Through the seven matches over the weekend, Miller won all by technical fall or pin. Ethan won the Greco final match by technical fall (8-0) and the Freestyle final by pin (0:26).
Grebel was the Greco tournament’s ‘Top Pinner’ by pinning the most amount of opponents (3) in the shortest amount of match time (2:10) out of 283 wrestlers enroute to his championship Friday night. Saturday’s Freestyle title proved to be more difficult as he needed a last minute flurry of points in the championship match to earn a 7-4 decision.
Micheal Buetler earned a State title in Greco competition then followed that up with a runner up performance in Freestyle. Ethan Langemo, Jake Tangen, and Jaden Oestern all won titles in Freestyle and were runner’s up in Greco.
VC Express Wrestling club, coached by Tim Miller, Doug Muske, and York Grebel, entered 12 participants in the two day event that caps off the wrestling season which, for some, began in November. James Schwehr competed at the 55 Bantam division securing 2 wins in Freestyle. Both Will Schwehr and Christian Buetler place 2nd in both styles. Ryer Muske and Jonah Schuldheisz both place 2nd in Greco and then 4th in Free Style. Koye Grebel placed 5th in Greco and 3rd in Freestyle. Koye was the ‘Top Pinner’ (4 pins in 6:53) in the Freestyle tournament out of 338 wrestlers.
