Coach Nielson’s Thoughts:

Blake’s determination shows through again as he runs his 2020 record to perfect 10-0. On Thursday he will have that record tested as he will be playing a contender for the singles state championship in Finnian O’Donnell of Shanley.

I was able to watch some competitive tennis in the first set with Kai and Seth. I went across the street to watch #4-6. The next thing I know, both Kai and Seth’s matches were done. They turned it on in the second set winning 6-0 and 6-1 respectively.

Derek fought against an athletic #4 player. After dropping the second set 4-6, he gutted out an 11-9 win in the super tiebreaker.

Trey and Casey were down 4-3 40-0 in the second set and won 4 straight points to win the game. They were then down 40-0 at 4-4 to then come back to win 4 straight points to go up 5-4. This never give up mentality served you both well today and led to winning that second set.

Max played his first ever varsity match today and it was long. So long that the coaches decided to play the second and third sets as super tiebreakers. He played very consistent tennis. Max has improved so much. His next step in his progression will be moving the ball around and also adding a little more depth and pace to his consistency. Great job Max.

We have Shanley on Thursday at home at 4pm. We haven’t beat them in 15 years as a team. We are the underdogs. We have one day to shore up some volley technique along with groundstroke footwork to give us a shot at knocking off a perennially state qualifying team. I’m not expecting to win or lose as a team on Thursday, but I do expect some excellent tennis along with the full effort and focus as a team to give us a chance to win. Let’s go out there on Thursday and give it our all so we can stand proud as a team with a win or a loss.

Coach Susan Kringlie’s comments: With a limited JV Jamestown squad, Valley City started quickly and showed their depth of experience today. Setting up points and moving opponents around were executed in each match, especially by eighth-grader E. Olson in singles and by Sophomores A. Rogelstad and D. Bear in doubles. A great showing for an improving JV squad!

Great job Hi-Liners!
